Care Calendar

A year in bonsai

Bay Area care schedules tuned to Northern California's distinct dry summers, mild winters, and foggy springs.

Spring Care — March through May

  • Repot deciduous trees before buds open
  • Begin fertilizing with nitrogen-rich mix
  • Prune to shape as new growth hardens off
  • Watch for aphids and scale on fresh growth
  • Begin wiring before leaves fully unfurl
  • Repot junipers as temps rise above 50°F
  • First candle pinch on Black Pines in April
  • Move tropicals outside when nights stay above 55°F

Summer Care — June through August

  • Water daily — twice daily in heat spikes over 90°F
  • Provide afternoon shade for Japanese Maples
  • Pinch new growth to encourage ramification
  • Black pine candle-cutting mid-July
  • Reduce nitrogen fertilizer by late August
  • Monitor for spider mites in hot dry spells
  • Check for root-bound trees showing stress
  • Remove dead wood and protect with cut paste

Autumn Care — September through November

  • Repot conifers as fall rains begin
  • Defoliate deciduous trees to study structure
  • Switch to phosphorus-rich fertilizer
  • Prepare winter protection for tropicals
  • Photograph your collection at peak fall color
  • Begin planning and wiring deciduous trees
  • Remove wires before they cut into thickening bark
  • Order fresh akadama for spring repotting season

Winter Care — December through February

  • Protect from frost below 28°F (use fleece or cold frame)
  • Reduce watering — check soil before each session
  • Study and plan spring styling work
  • Deep clean and sharpen tools
  • Repot early-blooming trees after flowering
  • Keep junipers outdoors for dormancy chill hours
  • Order pots, wire, and supplies for spring
  • Attend local club winter shows and critiques
